Tesla Virtual Power Plant Powered by PSEG Long Island Battery Storage Rewards Program
Join the Tesla Virtual Power Plant (VPP) to support Long Island’s energy grid, earn money and maintain energy security. Learn about the benefits, eligibility, compensation and more about the VPP powered by your utility PSEG Long Island.
Overview of the Program
The Tesla Virtual Power Plant (VPP) powered by PSEG Long Island connects communities of homes with Powerwall to enhance Long Island’s grid reliability and resiliency. By joining the Tesla VPP program, your Powerwall will provide support by discharging excess stored energy when the grid needs it most. Earn $0.25 for every kWh your Powerwall supplies during these events, in addition earn $8 per kW per month from May to September, based upon your average performance across all events within a month. It is estimated that you can earn $158 per Powerwall each year. Learn more about how your compensation is calculated.
Note: You always maintain full control and can adjust your Tesla VPP Event Backup Reserve to determine your contribution while ensuring adequate backup energy supply for outages.
Benefits
- Optimize Your Powerwall’s Value: Receive $0.25 for every kWh your Powerwall provides during events, in addition to a capacity payment of $8/kW-month from May to September, which can add up to over $100 a year per Powerwall enrolled with no need to change your energy usage behavior.
- Maintain Your Energy Security: Powerwall will never discharge below your Tesla VPP Event Backup Reserve, allowing you to maintain backup energy during outages.
- Stabilize The Grid: Help keep Long Island’s energy clean and reliable.
- Community Strength: Join a vast network of Tesla users, helping to form the world’s largest distributed battery system.
Eligibility
Powerwall owners are eligible to participate if you:
- Have a residential electric account in PSEG Long Island’s territory
- Have a completed interconnection for your Powerwall with PSEG-LI and remain compliant with interconnection requirements
- Are not enrolled with another aggregator
Sign up through the Tesla app and your eligibility will be reviewed. If eligible, you will be automatically enrolled.
Enrollment
To enroll:
- Open the Tesla app and select the Tesla Virtual Power Plant section on the home screen.
- Ensure that you have your PSEG Long Island utility bill with you to retrieve your account number.
- Enter your information so that PSEG Long Island can verify you as a current customer including name, account number as stated on your PSEG Long Island utility bill, email and phone number. Review the program information and select 'Agree and Apply.'
Your application will now undergo review by PSEG Long Island. If you are determined to be eligible, you will be enrolled automatically.
Participation
Once you are enrolled in the program, Tesla will periodically call upon the virtual power plant for scheduled grid support events. When these events occur, your Powerwall will dispatch excess stored energy back to the grid. There could be up to 20 events between May - September. Events will be scheduled with between 3 and 21 hours advanced notice. Events last 2 to 3 hours and can occur between the hours of 6 AM and 12 AM.
How Participation Works
- Pre-Event: When an event is scheduled, you will receive a notification in the Tesla app and your Powerwall will prioritize charging in preparation.
- During the Event: Powerwall automatically discharges to support the grid, maintaining levels above your Event Backup Reserve. Powerwall will never discharge below 20%.
- Post-Event: Once the event is over, Powerwall returns to normal operations.
Controlling Your Participation
You can control your level of participation in the program using the following options in the Tesla app:
- Event Backup Reserve: Your Event Backup Reserve determines how much energy your Powerwall will keep powering your home. After enrollment, your Event Backup Reserve will automatically be set to 20% to ensure you will always have energy in your Powerwall to power your home. Throughout your participation in the program, you will be able to adjust your Event Backup Reserve up (less participation) or down (more participation) to suit your individual needs.
- Opting out of a Single Event: You can opt out of a scheduled or ongoing event, which will cause your Powerwall to stop reacting to the event and resume normal operation.
- Suspending Participation: When you suspend your participation, your Powerwall will not react to current or future events until you resume participation.
Note: Your payments are directly tied to how much you participate. If you increase your Event Backup Reserve, opt out of events or suspend your participation, you will earn less compensation.
Compensation
Earn $0.25 for every kWh your Powerwall supplies during these events, in addition to a capacity payment of $8 per kW per month from May to September. You must be enrolled prior to May to be eligible for the $8 per kW per month component of the compensation for a given year. The following factors will determine how much you can earn:
- Participating Energy Capacity: The number of Powerwall units and your VPP Backup Reserve
Note: Lower your VPP Backup Reserve to earn more. - Charge Level: How fully charged your Powerwall is before the event
- Energy Export: The amount of energy your Powerwall can safely discharge during the event
Note: Powerwall may limit exports to safe levels. - Event Participation: Don’t opt out of events or suspend your participation to maximize your earnings. Your Event Backup Reserve ensures you will always have energy in your Powerwall in case of an outage.
Examples:
A one-Powerwall system with a 20% Backup Reserve can contribute 10.8 kWh, at a rate of 3.6 kW over three hours earning $2.70 per event, and $28.80 per month. If there were five total events during the program season this system would earn over $150.
A two-Powerwall system with a 40% Backup Reserve can contribute 16.2 kWh, at a rate of 5.4 kW over three hours earning $4.05 per event, and $43.20 per month. If there were five total events during the program season this system would earn over $235.

- Tesla Arbitration Requirement
Agreement to Arbitrate
Read this part carefully because it means you are agreeing that any unresolved dispute between you and Tesla will not be decided by a judge or jury in a public courtroom, but instead by a single arbitrator in a private arbitration.
If you have a dispute arising out of or relating to any aspect of this Agreement and the relationship between you and Tesla, Inc. or its affiliates (which we call “Tesla”), send us an email to resolutions@tesla.com, describing Your dispute and how you would like it resolved. If it is not resolved within 60 days from the date of Your email, you agree that Your dispute can only be resolved by a single arbitrator in an arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules. This includes claims arising before you ordered Your System (such as claims related to statements Tesla made about our products). We will pay all AAA fees for any arbitration, which will be held in the city or county of Your legal residence. To learn more about the Rules and how to begin an arbitration, you can call any AAA office or go to www.adr.org. The arbitrator can only resolve disputes between you and Tesla, and cannot consolidate claims from others without consent from you, Tesla, and the others. You can only bring claims in arbitration against Tesla in Your individual capacity and not as a plaintiff or class member in any class or representative action (and the same is true for Tesla). If a court or arbitrator decides that any part of this agreement to arbitrate cannot be enforced as to a specific claim for relief or remedy (such as what lawyers call “injunctive” or “declaratory” relief), then that claim or remedy (and only that claim or remedy) will be carved out of the arbitration and can be filed in court; all other claims must be arbitrated. If you prefer, you can take Your individual dispute to a small claims court instead. If you don’t want to agree to arbitration, you can "opt out” of arbitration by sending us a letter within 30 days after placing Your initial order for Your System. Send the letter to Tesla, Inc.; P.O. Box 15430; Fremont, CA 94539-7970 and include Your name, Your order number, the name of the product you ordered and a statement explaining Your desire to opt out of arbitration. If you do not opt out, Your agreement to arbitrate overrides any different arbitration agreement between us, including any arbitration agreement in a lease or finance contract.
