Installing Powerwall with Backup Gateway 1
A Powerwall system consists of at least one Powerwall, a Tesla Gateway and the electrical hardware required by the home such as a meter, main panel and solar inverter. Powerwall can be wall-mounted or floor-mounted, and both Powerwall and the Gateway have multiple cable entry points for flexible installation. Installers can use a smartphone, tablet or laptop to commission the Powerwall system. Installation should be performed by a certified electrician.
For Powerwall installations with Backup Gateway 2, see the Backup Gateway 2 Installation Page.
Installation Manual
Installers should download and fully review the Powerwall 2 AC with Backup Gateway Installation Manual prior to installing a Powerwall system.
Powerwall 2 Product and Features Overview
This video introduces Powerwall, including its design and key features, and the primary benefits to Powerwall customers. It provides an overview of the complete Powerwall system, and explains how the system can be configured for either whole home or partial home backup.
Introduction to the Backup Gateway
This video introduces the Backup Gateway, which controls the connection between the Powerwall system and the grid. The video explores the Backup Gateway enclosure and explains the function of each of the main components in the enclosure.
Installing the Backup Gateway
This video provides instructions on mounting and wiring the Backup Gateway, beginning with the items to review and decide prior to mounting the Backup Gateway enclosure. Once the enclosure has been mounted, the video explains when a circuit breaker should be added to the service inlet in the Backup Gateway, when the main bonding jumper should be left in place and how to connect high voltage power and communications wiring to the Backup Gateway (including wire and torque specifications).
Mounting Powerwall
This video provides instructions on the Powerwall mounting process, including unloading and transporting the Powerwall, installing the wall bracket and mounting Powerwall to either the floor (preferred installation method) or the wall. The video also defines the Powerwall mounting requirements, including required clearances and the use of shims if necessary.
Wiring Powerwall
This video provides instructions on connecting the high voltage power and communications wiring to Powerwall, beginning with choosing either rear or side cable entry into the Powerwall. The video then explains how to connect the communications wiring using the provided 4-pin connector, and introduces the terminating resistor which is required for a single Powerwall or the last Powerwall in a chain. Finally, the video explains how to connect the high voltage power using the provided AC power harness, followed by the steps to replace the wiring compartment cover and the side cover.
Energy Monitoring Installation
This series of videos introduces the Powerwall system energy monitoring equipment and provides instructions for installing current transformers (CTs) for accurate energy monitoring.
Energy monitoring is required for the Powerwall system to function; power flow information, including the energy being produced by solar and the energy being consumed by the home, is provided to the Backup Gateway, which uses that information to control Powerwall charge and discharge. The Backup Gateway relies on accurate information to control the Powerwall system as defined by the customer using the Tesla app. This series also introduces the equipment used to monitor power flow and explains how to install the equipment and configure it in the Commissioning Wizard.
Commissioning the Powerwall System
The following steps outline connecting the Gateway to the internet and logging into the Commissioning Wizard; once logged into the Wizard, follow the prompts in the Wizard to complete the commissioning process.
- Step 1 Establish an internet connection for the Gateway via Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular network.
- Step 2 Power on the system by turning breakers on for the Gateway, Powerwall, Solar and home loads.
- Step 3 Connect to the Gateway Wi-Fi named “TEG-###” from your smartphone or laptop where ### is the last 3 numbers of your Gateway serial number.
- Step 4 Proceed past security certificate notification (Powerwall is secure but does not have a certificate that web browsers recognize).
- Step 5Open a web browser and enter http://TEG-### in the address bar.
- Step 6 Run the wizard by logging in with your company email and password which is “S” followed by the Gateway serial number.
Note: See the Installation Troubleshooting appendix in the Powerwall 2 AC Installation Manual for troubleshooting tips on accessing the Commissioning Wizard, updating the Gateway firmware and configuring energy meters.
