Tesla is a retail electricity provider that brings Tesla’s unique expertise in energy markets to homes in Texas. Integrated with a seamless mobile app experience, Tesla Electric offers electricity plans designed for households to save on their electricity bill. Signing up is easy and takes less than five minutes in the Tesla app.

Tesla Electric is available to anyone in Texas who can choose their own electricity provider—you don’t have to own a Tesla product to be eligible.

You can sign up for Tesla Electric through the Tesla app. To get started, tap the menu in the top-right corner of the Tesla app. Select the ‘Discover’ tab and locate the Tesla Electric card under ‘Services.’ Once you tap the card, you will see a general overview of Tesla Electric and will be able to sign up. Start by entering your address.

Select the New Address option if you are moving to this address, or your previous electricity provider sent a scheduled move-out. If you are eligible, you can complete your sign-up by following these steps:

Select your Tesla Electric plan. This is where you can see the latest rates for Tesla Electric.
If you own a Tesla vehicle, you can opt in for unlimited home charging.
Set up your payment details to enable autopay. We ask for your bank details so we can pay you back for the energy you export to the grid.
Enter your preferred day to start your Tesla Electric service.
Review your plan and submit your enrollment application.
You will receive an email confirmation once your sign-up is complete. You can expect to see your Tesla Electric service activated within a few hours (if you signed up during the week) or a couple days (if you signed up during the weekend).

Note: You do not need a Tesla vehicle or Powerwall to sign up for Tesla Electric.

How Tesla Electric Fixed Works

Tesla Electric Fixed allows you to power your home at an affordable rate, without the worry of breakup fees, minimum usage charges or monthly base fees. With Tesla Electric Fixed, you will:

Pay a flat energy rate for energy used to power your home during Standard Hours (4 AM to 12 AM)
Pay a lower energy rate for energy used to power your home during Wind Hours (12 AM to 4 AM)

For Customers With Vehicles

If you own a Tesla vehicle, you can enjoy unlimited overnight charging at home for a low fixed monthly fee. To ensure that you receive this benefit, your vehicle is automatically scheduled to charge overnight when you sign up for Tesla Electric. Additionally, you can charge your vehicle throughout the day at a low, flat rate. With Tesla Electric Fixed, you will:

Pay a low fixed monthly fee for vehicle charging sessions between 12 AM and 6 AM
Pay a flat energy rate for vehicle charging sessions between 6 AM and 12 AM

If you own an electric vehicle made by another manufacturer, you can still charge your vehicle at a discounted rate during Wind Hours between 12 AM and 4 AM.

For Customers With Powerwall

Paired with a Powerwall, Tesla Electric Fixed allows you to earn credits by participating in the Tesla Virtual Power Plant and discharging energy back to the grid. Additionally, Tesla will configure your device to specific settings, giving you more certainty of how much your Powerwall is earning. If you own a Powerwall, you will:

Earn a fixed VPP credit of $400/year per Powerwall (VPP credit is capped at $1200 per year, or three Powerwalls)
Earn a competitive fixed rate for exporting stored Powerwall energy

Note: For new Powerwall owners, you will need Permission to Operate (PTO) from your local utility before your Powerwall can be configured to export energy to the grid. Once PTO is received and your local utility has reprogrammed your electric meter to report energy exports to your electricity provider, you will receive the credits for supporting the grid.

For Customers With Solar

If you own solar systems, Tesla Electric Fixed allows you to earn credits by selling excess solar back to the grid. With Tesla Electric, you will:

Earn a flat sellback rate of 5￠/kWh for excess solar

How to Manage Your Home's Energy

Once enrolled in Tesla Electric, you can view how energy flows to and from your home in real time. The Tesla app displays a power flow screen showing how your home consumes or produces energy, and how it is matched with other members, Tesla’s sustainable energy sources and the grid. You can power your home with Tesla’s sustainable sources or with energy exported by other members when your own solar panels or Powerwalls are not providing enough power.

The direction of the power flows indicates the sources of energy your home is matched with. For example, if you see power flowing from Tesla’s sustainable sources into your home, your consumption is matched with sustainable energy.

If you have a Tesla vehicle enrolled into Tesla Electric, you can also monitor how much your vehicle has charged overnight through the ‘Charge Stats’ card in the Tesla app.

How to Make Payments

You can manage your Tesla Electric bills by signing in to the Tesla app and tapping ‘Billing’ on the Tesla Electric home screen. You can adjust your autopay settings, make a one-time payment and view your statements or payment history. Learn more about how your monthly bill is calculated.

Your Tesla Electric Fixed bill will reflect the following:

Tesla Electric charges: Energy used to power your home during Standard Hours and Wind Hours
Tesla Electric sellback credits: Real-time energy sold back to the grid
Tesla Electric Home Charging: Energy used to charge your vehicle during overnight hours
Tesla VPP: Credit earned through participation in Tesla VPP
TDSP charges: Transmission and Delivery (TDSP) fees
Taxes
Excess sellback credit rollover: Remaining balance of credits, if total earned credits exceed total electricity costs and taxes

Frequently Asked Questions

Before you start the sign-up process, you will be prompted to enter your address or ESI-ID. This will determine your eligibility.

If your address or ESI-ID returns as a match, you qualify to join Tesla Electric at this time.

If your address or ESI-ID does not return as a match, you do not qualify to join Tesla Electric at this time.
If your switch from another retail electricity provider to Tesla Electric goes off smoothly, your application will be approved within 24 hours. If you requested a switch date in the future, your Tesla Electric service may not be activated until your scheduled switch date.
Unlike your plan with Tesla Electric, some retail electricity providers may charge you an early termination fee if you switch providers before your contract term is over. If this is the case with your current electricity plan, it will be included in the final bill from your current provider.
When you sign up for Tesla Electric Fixed, your Powerwall is automatically set to Tesla Electric Mode, as it is the only mode supported for Tesla Electric customers. When you sign up for Tesla Electric Dynamic, you have full control of your Powerwall settings.
You can access your EFL on the Tesla Electric home screen in your Tesla app. Once you open your Tesla app, tap the Tesla Electric banner and you will find a link to your current EFL at the bottom of the screen.
You can validate your meter readings by registering with Smart Meter Texas. This site allows you to see the meter readings that your local utility is sending to Tesla.
When you enroll in the Tesla Electric Fixed plan, and to be eligible for the $400 in annual VPP credits, your Powerwall is automatically set to the following configurations:

Backup Reserve must be set to 25%.

Tesla Electric mode must be enabled.

Grid charging and discharging must be enabled.

Tesla will disable Storm Watch.
Powerwall owners who were previously enrolled in Tesla Electric will be moved to Tesla Electric Dynamic. Tesla vehicle owners who were previously enrolled in Tesla Electric will remain on their current contract and will be offered to re-enroll in either Tesla Electric Fixed or Tesla Electric Dynamic.

Payments and Energy Rates Show All Hide All

Any excess credits accumulated during a given billing period will appear on your next Tesla Electric bill. You can request a digital payout to your bank account for any amount of excess credit of at least $10 or more. To request a payout, open the Tesla app and follow these steps:
1. Tap ‘Tesla Electric’ > ‘Billing.’ If you have any excess credits, you will see the amount.
2. Tap ‘Request Payout.’
3. Confirm your bank account details.
4. Tap ‘Submit.’
Note: You must be enrolled with Tesla Electric for at least one year before you are eligible for payouts. Until you reach one year of enrollment, any excess credits will roll over to the next bill. Excess credit value less than $10 will automatically roll over to your next bill.
If you want to update your payment method, follow these steps:
1. Navigate to the ‘Tesla Electric’ banner in your Tesla app.
2. Tap ‘Billing’ > ‘Payments.’
3. Select your current payment method underneath your billing address.
4. Tap ‘Add bank account’ to add your new payment information.
You can opt to make a one-time payment by following these steps:
1. Navigate to the ‘Tesla Electric’ banner in your Tesla app.
2. Tap ‘Billing’ > ‘Make a one-time payment.’
3. Confirm your payment details and press submit to complete your payment.
Every billing period, Tesla measures the amount of energy used to power your home. This amount will show up on your Tesla Electric bill according to the energy rates. These rates will vary depending on the time of day. For example, you will pay more for power consumed during hours when energy rates are higher, than for power consumed during hours when energy rates are lower.

Any excess energy sent to the grid within a given billing period will show up on your Tesla Electric bill as sellback credits. Your total amount of sellback credits is determined by the sellback rate. If your total amount of credits earned exceeds the total amount of your Tesla Electric bill, the remaining amount will appear next to ‘Excess Sellback Credit Rollover.’ Additionally, if you are a Powerwall owner participating in the Tesla Virtual Power Plant, your VPP credits will also appear on your bill starting on your first full billing period.

For each vehicle enrolled for unlimited home charging, you will pay a low fixed monthly fee. This fee will cover all vehicle charging performed during overnight hours of 12 AM – 6 AM (shown as a $0/kWh rate). It will also cover any TDSP fees associated with overnight charging.

Energy used to charge your vehicle outside the overnight hours will appear on the bill at the usual home electricity rate. This also includes any associated TDSP charges.
These are the charges that come from your local Transmission Distribution Service Provider (TDSP). They are also known as your utility company or Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU). The TDSP charges are a mix of consumption-based fees and standard monthly charges. You’ll see these two types of charges itemized on your billing statement. TDSP charges may fluctuate depending on your usage and if your local utility company increases or decreases their fees.
