Update Vehicle Firmware to Correct Restraint Control Module Calibration

Tesla has issued a non-compliance recall on certain model year 2021-2023 Model X manufactured for North America and are subject to U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208 or its equivalent. The recall is to correct the restraint control module calibration to ensure the front passenger airbag performance complies with regulatory standards for certain low speed collision events.

Software versions 2022.40.200 and 2022.44 or later include the remedy that ensures the front passenger airbag complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208. These software versions are expected to deploy over-the-air (OTA) by Q4 2022.

Is my vehicle affected by this recall?

All owners can check if their VIN is affected by using either the Tesla VIN Recall Search or NHTSA VIN Recall Search tools.

What is this issue and how does it affect my vehicle?

On affected vehicles, the restraint control module (RCM) calibration may result in the frontal passenger airbag deploying in an unintended configuration during certain low-speed collision events. This may then result in noncompliance with the front passenger airbag performance requirements in FMVSS 208 for a 3- or 6-year-old front passenger who is unbelted and out of position.

Is my vehicle safe to drive?

We are not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this condition. In certain low-speed collision events, where a 3- or 6-year-old front passenger is unbelted and out of position, a passenger airbag that does not comply with FMVSS 208 may increase the risk of injury.

The software remedy will enhance the calibration of the restraint control module to ensure the front passenger airbag complies with regulatory standards, and the remedy is expected to deploy OTA to affected vehicles by Q4 2022.

Do I need to make a service appointment for this recall?

No. This recall is addressed by updating the vehicle software, which does not require the customer to schedule a service appointment. There is no immediate action needed. Once software versions 2022.40.200 and 2022.44 or later which includes the remedy are available, we will notify affected customers and deploy the update OTA to their vehicles.
