Update Vehicle Firmware to Disable Boombox

Modified April 8, 2022
Tesla has issued a recall on certain model year 2020-2022 Model S, Model X and Model Y vehicles and certain model year 2017-2022 Model 3 vehicles either built or retrofitted with pedestrian warning system (PWS) to disable the Boombox functionality when the vehicle is in Drive, Neutral or Reverse mode.
In April 2022, Tesla voluntarily expanded the recall to also disable the Boombox functionality while the Summon or Smart Summon feature is in use. The software versions containing this change are:
- 2022.3.102.1
- 2022.3.103.5
- 2022.3.103.0.1
- 2022.12 or later
This recall is addressed by a software update, which does not require customers to schedule a service appointment.
Is my car affected by this recall?
All owners can check if their VIN is affected by using either the Tesla VIN Recall Search or NHTSA VIN Recall Search tools. If your vehicle is equipped with a PWS and running one of the software versions listed above or a version greater than 2022.12, it is not subject to this issue. You can confirm your vehicle’s software version by tapping 'Controls' > 'Software’ on the touchscreen or at the bottom of your vehicle’s home screen in the Tesla mobile app.
What is the issue?
Prior to this recall, the Boombox functionality allowed customers to play preset or custom sounds through the PWS external speaker while the vehicle was in motion, including while Summon or Smart Summon is used.
Although Boombox and the pedestrian alert sounds are mutually exclusive and the Boombox functionality can make a vehicle more noticeable to pedestrians, it may cause the PWS to be non-compliant with federal regulatory standards when used in motion.
Is my car safe to drive?
Although we are not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this condition, continue to drive safely when pedestrians are present.
Do I need to make a service appointment for this recall?
No. This recall is addressed by a software update, which does not require customers to schedule a service appointment.
