Update Vehicle Firmware to Correct Door Lockout Functionality

Tesla has voluntarily issued a non-compliance recall on all model year 2021-2023 Model S vehicles produced between February 3, 2021, and December 13, 2023, and all Model X vehicles produced between August 18, 2021, and December 14, 2023, that received software release 2021.36 and later releases (up to release 2023.44.30, which contains the recall remedy). The release permitted the cabin doors to disengage from the latched position during a crash, which does not comply with FMVSS No. 214, S9.2.3(b)(1).

At no cost to customers, affected vehicles received an over-the-air software remedy, which began deploying on or shortly after December 12, 2023, with software release 2023.44.30. Software release 2023.44.30 or later releases incorporate the lockout functionality that complies with FMVSS No. 214, S9.2.3(b)(1).

What is this issue and how does it affect my vehicle?

On certain model year 2021-2023 Model S and Model X vehicles, software release 2021.36 and later releases (up to release 2023.44.30, which contains the recall remedy) excluded the lockout functionality, which does not comply with FMVSS No. 214, S9.2.3(b)(1).

Is my vehicle affected by this recall and what should I do?

All owners can check if their VIN is affected by using either the Tesla VIN Recall Search or NHTSA VIN Recall Search tools. No service visit is necessary, and no further action is necessary from owners whose vehicles are equipped with software release 2023.44.30 or a later software release.

You can confirm your vehicle’s software version by tapping 'Controls' > 'Software’ on your vehicle’s touchscreen or at the bottom of your vehicle’s home screen in the Tesla app.
