Update Vehicle Firmware for Tail Lamps False Fault Detection

Tesla has issued a safety recall on certain model year 2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles to correct a software error that may cause tail lamps on one or both sides to illuminate intermittently due to false fault detections during the vehicle wake up process.

Software versions 2022.40.100 and 2022.40.4.1 or later include the remedy to ensure tail lamps operate as designed to prevent false fault detections during the vehicle wake up process. These software versions began deploying over-the-air (OTA) on November 4, 2022.

Is my vehicle affected by this recall?

All owners can check if their VIN is affected by using the Tesla VIN Recall Search tool.

What is this issue and how does it affect my vehicle?

On affected vehicles, a software error may cause the tail lamps on one or both sides to illuminate intermittently, which may cause false fault detections during the vehicle wake up process. Brake lamps, backup lamps and turn signal lamps are not affected by this condition and will continue to operate as designed.

Is my vehicle safe to drive?

We are not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this condition. An inoperative tail lamp may result in reduced visibility in dark conditions, which may increase the risk of a collision.

The software remedy will correct the false fault detections during the vehicle wake up process and ensure that all tail lamps operate as designed.

Do I need to make a service appointment for this recall?

No. This recall is addressed by updating the vehicle software, which does not require the customer to schedule a service appointment. There is no immediate action needed. The software release that contains the remedy has deployed over-the-air (OTA) to all affected vehicles. If your vehicle is running software version 2022.40.100 or 2022.40.1 or later, your vehicle is not subject to this issue. You can confirm your vehicle’s software version by tapping ‘Controls’ > ‘Software’ on your touchscreen.
