Model S Safety Update
As part of the industry-wide recall of Takata airbag inflators, the front passenger airbags in certain 2014-2016 Model S vehicles are affected and Tesla will be replacing them. According to a schedule previously determined by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall of the front passenger airbags in 2012 Model S vehicles began in January 2017, was extended to 2013 Model S vehicles in January 2018, and was extended to 2014-2016 Model S vehicles in January 2019. The recall does not affect the Roadster, Model X, Model 3, or later Model S vehicles.
As noted by NHTSA, customers do not need to be concerned about recalled airbags in their vehicles before they receive a formal recall notice. The predetermined schedule for recall and remedy ensures that customers will have sufficient time to replace their recalled airbags before they present a risk to safety, due to the fact that the airbag inflators only become defective based on a number of different factors, including age.
Just as Tesla chose to apply NHTSA’s schedule to recall 2012-2013 Model S vehicles in all markets globally, we will do the same for all affected 2014-2016 vehicles, including in countries where local regulators have not required a recall. The safety of our customers is paramount, and we are taking this action even though there have been no airbag ruptures or other related incidents in any of our vehicles.
Tesla continues to contact customers affected by this recall. If you own a 2012-2016 Model S vehicle affected by this recall and have not completed this replacement, please schedule a service appointment in the Tesla app.
