Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) protects your Tesla Account by requiring a secondary form of verification before signing in. Once multi-factor authentication is set up, you can use it to access your Tesla Account if you forget your password or are locked out.

Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication Using an Authenticator App

You will need your account credentials, a mobile device and a third-party authenticator app to complete the set-up process.

Set Up With a Mobile Device

To set up multi-factor authentication with a mobile device, follow these steps:

1. If not installed already, download an authenticator app on your mobile device.
2. Sign in to your Tesla Account with your email and password. Then, tap ‘Profile Settings.’
3. Under Multi-Factor Authentication, tap ‘Manage.’
4. To set up multi-factor authentication for your Tesla Account, enter your account credentials and follow the steps listed. You will be asked to copy the generated passcode from your authenticator app.
5. Return to the Tesla website to enter the passcode.
6. Tap ‘Get New Passcodes’ and save a copy of your single-use backup passcodes. You can use these backup passcodes to sign in if you lose access to your authenticator app or device.

Set Up With a Desktop QR Code

To set up multi-factor authentication with a desktop QR code, follow these steps:

1. If not installed already, download an authenticator app on your mobile device.
2. Sign in to your Tesla Account with your email and password. Then, select ‘Profile Settings.’
3. Under Multi-Factor Authentication, tap ‘Manage.’
4. To set up multi-factor authentication for your Tesla Account, scan the provided QR code with a mobile device to generate a passcode.
5. Return to the Tesla website to enter the passcode.
6. Tap ‘Get New Passcodes’ and save a copy of your single-use backup passcodes. You can use these backup passcodes to sign in if you lose access to your authenticator app or device.

Set Up With a Security Key

To set up multi-factor authentication with a security key, follow these steps:

1. If not installed already, download an authenticator app on your mobile device.
2. Sign in to your Tesla Account with your email and password. Then, tap ‘Profile Settings.’
3. Under Multi-Factor Authentication, tap ‘Manage.’
4. On the set-up screen, select ‘set-up manually.’
5. A security key will display your screen. This key will need to be entered manually into the authenticator app. Copy the provided key.
6. Open your authenticator app and add a new account. Enter the key when prompted. Once complete, the authenticator app should provide a one-time passcode.
7. Return to the Tesla website to enter the passcode.
8. Tap ‘Get New Passcodes’ and save a copy of your single-use backup passcodes. You can use these backup passcodes to sign in if you lose access to your authenticator app or device.

You can disable multi-factor authentication on your Tesla Account using backup passcodes or your Tesla Account.

Disable Multi-Factor Authentication Using Backup Passcodes

To disable multi-factor authentication with backup passcodes, follow these steps:

1. Sign in to your Tesla Account on the Tesla website.
2. When asked to enter your MFA passcode, tap ‘Verify another way.’
3. Enter one of the unused backup passcodes you've saved from when you set up MFA. Then, tap 'Submit.'
4. Once you sign in, tap ‘Profile Settings.’
5. Under ‘Multi-Factor Authentication,’ tap ‘Manage.’
6. Under ‘Registered Devices,’ tap ‘Manage.’
7. Tap ‘Remove’ for all the devices.

If you do not have your backup passcodes or used all your backup passcodes, try another method below or contact the Customer Support team.

Disable Multi-Factor Authentication Using Your Tesla Account

To disable multi-factor authentication with your Tesla Account, follow these steps:

1. Sign in to your Tesla Account on the Tesla website.
2. Under ‘Multi-Factor Authentication,’ tap ‘Manage.’
3. Under ‘Registered Devices,’ tap ‘Manage.’
4. Tap ‘Remove’ on all registered devices.

Note: All devices must be removed to disable Multi-Factor Authentication on your Tesla Account.
