Update Vehicle Firmware to Disable FSD Beta “Rolling Stop” Functionality

Tesla proactively issued a recall for certain US and Canada vehicles that received software version 2020.40.4.10 or newer that contained the Full Self-Driving (Beta) feature. This recall affects only those FSD Beta participants who installed this software. The release software update introduced the “rolling stop” functionality, which allowed the vehicle to travel through all-way stop intersections before coming to a complete stop, but only if certain conditions are met.

Tesla will disable the “rolling stop” functionality for affected vehicles, starting with software version 2021.44.30.15, which is expected to deploy over-the-air (OTA), beginning in early February 2022.

Is my car affected by this recall?

All owners can check if their VIN is affected by using either the Tesla VIN Recall Search or NHTSA VIN Recall Search tools. The required software version (2021.44.30.15) is expected to deploy OTA to affected vehicles beginning early February 2022. Full Self-Driving (Beta) releases after software version 2021.44.30.15 will also not contain the “rolling stop” functionality.

What is this issue and how does it affect my vehicle?

Software version 2020.40.4.10 introduced the “rolling stop” functionality, which allowed the vehicle to travel through all-way stop intersections at a speed up to 9 km/h, without coming to a complete stop, but only if certain conditions are met. Entering an all-way stop intersection without coming to a complete stop may increase the risk of collision. We are not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this condition.

What are the required operating conditions to trigger the “rolling stop” functionality?

The required conditions include:

  1. The functionality must be enabled within the FSD Beta Profile settings; and
  2. The vehicle must be approaching an all-way stop intersection; and
  3. The vehicle must be traveling below 9 km/h; and
  4. No relevant moving cars are detected near the intersection; and
  5. No relevant pedestrians or bicyclists are detected near the intersection; and
  6. There is sufficient visibility for the vehicle while approaching the intersection; and
  7. All roads entering the intersection have a speed limit of 48 km/h or less.

Do I need to make a service appointment for this recall?

No. This recall is addressed by updating the vehicle software, which does not require the customer to schedule a service appointment.

Note: Software version containing the fix will be rolled out in early February 2022 and there is no immediate action required from the owners at this time.
